Watch the First Two Episodes of HUMAN TARGET

by John D. Estes on January 24, 2010

First of all, this blog is not about to become a TV station.  Second, hulu (and many other networks) only keep their videos up for a limited time, presumably because if you want to see older episodes of a show, you should buy them (remember when NEW things cost money and the old ones were just given away?  Welcome to The New Normal).

But I wanted to post a couple of episodes of  HUMAN TARGET to give folks a chance to see it, who might not ordinarily watch it.  Sometimes it’s much easier to just click on an embed rather than set the DVR or remember when a show is on.  I did this for CAPRICA yesterday.

You know the drill by now.  To see the episodes click on “read more.”

So far, I really like this show.  It’s not a deep as many people are getting used to from television, but not everything has to be.  It’s pure escapist fun.  In fact, it kind of reminds me of some of the hour long action/adventure series from the 70′s and 80′s, most notably stuff like THE A TEAM, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN or MACGYVER.  It’s most recent cousin would probably be PRISON BREAK.

Another way in which this show could be seen as somewhat of a throwback (and how it departs from PRISON BREAK) is that it does not appear to be hyper-serialized.  In other words, there isn’t one or several stories that unfold over the course of a season (or a series) like LOST or HEROES.  HUMAN TARGET seems self-contained.  Beginning-middle-explosion-end and you’re out just to start all over again next week.  You can watch one episode of this and know exactly what’s going on and be assured that what you are watching is going to deliver a satisfying ending.  These are mini movies, not a comic book.  Like TV used to be.

The cast is superb.  Mark Valley (Fringe, Boston Legal) is proving to be a more than capable series lead.  Chi McBride (Boston Public, Pushing Daisies) and Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) are two of the best character actors working today and they do not disappoint.  But I think something is missing, character-wise.  It might need a female regular or even a different point of view or two.  Though skilled and accomplished, the supporting cast seems thin in mere numbers.  But shows like these always pick someone up when needed.  In the meantime, the series seems to be dependent on, and gets full use of, the guest stars…  Like LOVE BOAT.  Heh.

But I’ll stop bloviating and let you judge for yourself.

Again, courtesy of hulu here are the first 2 episodes of HUMAN TARGET

Episode 01: “Pilot”

Episode 02: “Rewind”

So, what do you think?  Is it good?  Does it suck?

Is it too much of a throwback?
