Everybody should be reading the trades.

by John D. Estes on January 2, 2010

Everybody making movies, or interested in making movies should be reading the trades.  I don’t care if you’re a too good for Hollywood, staunch indie, never sell-out, Dogma’95 chanting, wide angle lens using auteur.

You need to be aware of what’s happening in your own industry.  And unless you only make home movies, you ARE in the industry.  Deal with it.

Fortunately, gone are the days where you have to buy an expensive subscription.  Now you can just log on and read online for free.  So no excuses.  You may want to click on their sponsors’ links so the writers can get paid.  And if you don’t, they may not be free for long.

Daily Variety

The Hollywood Reporter

You don’t have to read every page.  Just browse through and be aware of what’s going on.
